This consignment sale if for a model of Winchester that had far too short of a production run, in our opinion.  If you're not familiar with the BOSS system that was mounted on these, we'll give you more information in just a bit.

The Model 70 Classic SM BOSS was only produced in 1995 and 1996.  We're not sure in which of those years our serial number G110062 rolled off the assembly line.  It's chambered for the 7mm Rem Mag cartridge so you can reach out a long ways with this one.  A little bit recoil sensitive on a normal 7mm Reg Mag?  Don't worry, we've got the solution for that and it's already mounted on the rifle.  We'll get you those details in a minute also.

The barrel on our rifle is 24 inches, with the BOSS system adding another 3 inches for a total length of 27 inches.  The bore is clean, the barrel is bright and the rifling is clear and defined.  A manual safety is located at the rear of the bolt.  The trigger is light and breaks clean.  There is a 1/4" diameter spot of finish loss on the top of the barrel.  A minor scratch is located in the same area.  Other than that, the metal rates as Excellent.  The black synthetic stock shows signs of use but is in Very Good condition.  The Winchester rubber recoil pad is also in Very Good condition.

Ok, so what about this BOSS system?  Winchester produced the Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System (BOSS) as a combination muzzle brake and method of optimizing accuracy of the rifle.  We've read reviews of shooters dialing in 1/2 MOA groups at 100 yards using the BOSS.  Here's some further details from a Winchester supplement:

The BOSS gives the Model 70 a degree of accuracy found only on expensive custom rifles. The Model 70 offers the rifleman the best of two worlds: traditional craftsmanship and the latest in modern rifle technology. Now, more than ever, it is truly “The Rifleman’s Rifle.”

HOW THE BOSS™ WORKS
Barrel vibrations are the primary cause of rifle inaccuracy.Every time a rifle is fired, barrel vibrations are set in motion. These vibrations occur in all directions, even back and forth along the axis of the barrel. They are influenced by many factors such as bullet type, bullet
weight, primers, different powders and even barrel configurations.
The BOSS (Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System) is an adjustable weight that alters rifle barrel vibrations. By adjusting the weight on the BOSS, you can tune your rifle to specific ammunition, allowing a bullet to consistently exit the rifle muzzle at the optimum point in barrel vibration. At this optimum point, either at the peak or valley of a vibration wave, the rifle barrel is momentarily motionless. The suggested “sweet spots” (found on a separate sheet supplied with this manual) are the starting points for determining the optimum accuracy of your
BOSS equipped Model 70. Once the true “sweet spot” is determined for a given ammunition, your rifle will consistently deliver extraordinarily tight groups. The BOSS allowsyou to tune your rifle to your ammunition to get the optimum accuracy for all available factory loads.  When adjusted to the “sweet spot,” the BOSS will compensate for slight deviations in ammunition velocity.  The BOSS will not, however, compensate for poor shooting or flyers caused by low quality bullets and ammunition.

MUZZLE BRAKE FEATURE
The unique exhaust hole pattern on the BOSS provides considerable recoil reduction. Recoil reduction of the BOSS ranges from 30% to 50% — depending on caliber, weight of rifle, etc.  You will experience an increase in noise and concussion (muzzle blast) when a BOSS equipped rifle is fired.      (Our note as an addition to Wichester's comments)  An increase in noise level is to be expected in almost any muzzle brake and isn't unique to the BOSS system  Generally speaking, most consider it an acceptable trade-off for the reduced recoil.

The scope that comes with the rifle is a Leupold 3-9X VARI-X II.  The glass and reticle are clear and crisp.  The adjustment rings move freely.  Butler Creek lens caps protect the glass.  Windage and elevation dials are protected by screw-on caps.  The scope is in Excellent condition with just minor wear on the ridges of the screw-on caps and one spot of finish loss on the tube itself.

Overall, this rifle rates as at least Very Good and leans toward Excellent.  There's a lot of life left in this powerful rifle and it's decked up to be a real tack driver.  Compare the price of this rifle WITH the Leupold glass, WITH the BOSS system to what you'd pay for a new basic Model 70.  We think that you'll agree with us that this rifle is a heck of a value!

Purchase includes the rifle and the Leupold scope as shown.

This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test-fired this rifle.  We have performed all function checks and find no issues to report.  As with all pre-owned firearms, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the rifle.
