Winchester

This rifle comes to us as a consignment sale from a very good customer that has brought us a number of vintage firearms in amazing condition.  This particular rifle fits right in with those.

The Winchester Model 54 High Power Sporter preceded the introduction of the Model 70 by Winchester.  Our model is chambered in the very versatile .30-06 caliber.  It has a 24 inch barrel and a blued finish.  The serial number of 39440A indicates that the rifle was manufactured in 1933.  You certainly wouldn't guess that by looking at it.

The Mauser 98-type action cycles smoothly.  You will see some finish loss on the bolt as expected.  The trigger has a slight take up and then a firm, consistent wall.  The bolt contains the manual safety as is typical for this type of action.  The receiver is drilled and tapped.  Since this model came out before widespread use of scopes, the throw of the bolt handle was not designed with a scope in mind.  You will see that a previous owner reduced the top of the bolt handle to allow the use of a scope.  This is shown in the photo of the bolt but the work is not unattractive and has not defaced the look of the bolt.  We mention it solely to be complete in our description.

The barrel and receiver retain most of their original finish.  The interior of the barrel is very bright and the rifling is good.  The bore is clean.  A Redfield ajustable rear sight and a hooded front sight are atop the barrel.  The trigger guard and magazine floor plate are mostly without their original finish but the metal is smooth and shiny, without pitting or oxidation.  We'd rate the metal finish as Excellent.

The wood shows honest use with the normal bumps and dings but retains a good finish.  We found no cracks in the stock.  The forearm and pistol grip are checkered.  The stock has two attached sling swivels.  There are two spots of discoloration on the wood and they are located on the left side of the stock, under the receiver.  We'd rate the wood as Very Good.  A Pachmayr vented recoil pad is attached and is in Excellent condition.

Overall, we're incredibly impressed with this rifle.  Looks, condition, function . . . they're all there.  This is an incredible quality, vintage rifle and we doubt that you'll find many that look as good as this one does.  Take a good look at this Model 54 and see if you're as impressed as we are!
