This very unusual, rarely seen commemorative set comes to us as a consignment from a long-term customer. First of all, it’s a beautiful 3 piece set. However, trying to come up with details was very challenging. We’ve done our best efforts and believe that everything stated below is correct as far as we can determine.
In 1979, Justin Boots (now Justin Brands) commissioned a limited edition commemorative set to recognize the 100 year anniversary of the company. The firearms, at least, were manufactured by A Uberti and imported by Western Arms. Justin Boots ordered 750 sets consisting of a rifle and revolver chambered in .44-40. The set also included a belt buckle and (according to some sources) a pair of hand-signed boots and a wooden display case. In terms of the revolver, rifle and belt buckle, all three carried matching serial numbers. We can’t confirm the portion regarding the boots and case as we only have the other 3 items. It also appears that these sets were not offered for sale to the general public but were given to company officials and likely to other persons with whom the company had an important relationship.
Our set starts with the belt buckle. Like the rifle and revolver, it carries serial J203. It was included in the box with the revolver, is in a plastic pouch and appears to be in Mint condition.
The revolver (chambered in .44-40) is a reproduction of an 1873 single action model. It has a 7.5 inch barrel and a 6 shot cylinder. The serial number on the face of the cylinder also matches the serial number on the frame. There is an inlaid commemorative medallion in the right grip panel. The revolver also features several areas of gold inlay and some gold plated parts. The right side of the barrel shows “Justin 1879-1979”. The left barrel is marked “Aldo Uberti – Italy”.
The bore is good, the barrel is bright and the rifling appears to be good. The action is smooth and lockup is tight. The grips are in excellent condition as is the blued metal finish. There is a slight wear ring evident on the cylinder. The original box is in rough condition. Overall, the revolver grades as Excellent.
The rifle (also chambered in .44-40) has a 24 inch octagon barrel and is a reproduction of an 1866 Sporter. The rear sight is a ladder type and the front is a fixed post. The left barrel is labeled “A UBERTI & C. GARDONE V.T ITALLY”. The top of the barrel is stamped, “WESTERN ARMS CORP . SANTA FE NM.” The right side of the barrel is marked, “Justin 1879-1979”. A commemorative medallion is located in the right side of the buttstock. The buttpad is brass. The receiver features detailed engraving on both the left and right sides. Loading is accomplished by a sidegate on the right side of the receiver.
The bore is clean, the barrel is bright and rifling looks good. The wood is in Excellent condition and shows only the lightest of storage marks. The metal finish is Excellent and almost entirely intact. The original box is present but is in rough condition.
Overall, this is a very nice, very rare commemorative set with matching serial numbers and in Excellent condition. We can almost promise that none of your friends have these pieces. This would make a great display set and is a chance to own a very limited edition that is rarely seen!
Purchase includes the revolver as shown, original box, rifle as shown, original box and commemorative belt buckle.
This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired either firearm. We have performed our function checks and find no issues to report. As with all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of all items.
