Springfield

This post-WWI production 1903 Springfield is a very nice example of one of America's most famous and long lasting main battle rifles.  It's a consignment sale so we don't know the entire history of the rifle after it left service but it's in very good condition and a very nice piece.

The serial number of 1219314 indicates production at the Springfield Arsenal in 1921.  The barrel stamp of SA 2-21 would confirm that.  This receiver is also from the batch of receivers that were double heat treated for safety.  The owner tells us that this is an overseas bring back and that the corpsman's tape on the stock has the name of the service member that had been issued the rifle.  The same name is lightly engraved in the finger groove on the left side of the stock.  The stock also has what we believe to be the correct cartouches on the left side.  This one appears to be the D.A.L. inspection stamp, along with SA SPG.  The cartouches are clear and legible.  What would appear to be the correct, metal oiler/cleaning kit is contained in the buttstock of the rifle.  A 1903 style leather sling is attached to the rifle but we are not expert enough at sling identification to confirm if this was issued in the same time period.  We believe it to be based on our inspection but, again, are not experts in that area.

These models of the 1903 have a ladder rear sight, a blade front sight and bayonet lug underneath the barrel.  The wood is in Good condition and is as expected for GI wood from this time period.  We find nothing beyond the normal signs of issue and use.  The metal retains the majority of its parkerized finish and is in Good to Very Good condition.  The bolt cycles smoothly and the trigger is crisp, as expected.

Overall, this is a very nice example of a 1903 from the Springfield Arsenal and a rifle that would be an amazing addition to your collection.  If you're a fan of U.S. military service rifles and like the '03 Springfields, this one won't disappoint.
