This 1983 produced Smith & Wesson Model 581 (no dash) Distinguished Service Magnum is a great example of “they don’t make ‘em like that anymore”. Serial number on ours is ABY9334.
This is an L frame revolver chambered in .357 Magnum. The fluted cylinder holds 6 shots. The 4 inch barrel has a full lug underneath. The metal finish is blued and the grips are black, checkered rubber Pachmayr. There is a rear sight channel and a fixed front ramp sight. Action is both single action and double action.
The barrel is bright and the rifling looks good. The blued finish is in Excellent condition. There is a small area of finish loss as the muzzle. The grips are in Good – Very Good condition. Action is smooth and correct. The lockup is tight.
Overall, we’d grade this vintage revolver as Very Good. Smith hasn’t manufactured this model since 1992 and we don’t see a lot of them come through the shop. When we do see them, they are rarely in this nice of a condition. If you’re a fan of vintage Smith wheel guns, please take a good look at this very nice example.
Purchase includes the revolver as shown and a zippered, padded Browning soft case.
This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired this revolver. We have performed our function tests and find no issues to report. As with all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully and make sure that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the revolver.
