Savage

Another great looking rifle from what has been an amazing collection of mostly vintage, nicely maintained firearms.  This one fits right in with the rest of them.

Savage manufactured the Model 342 from 1950 - 1955.  There is no serial number on our rifle, nor is one required, since it was manufactured before 1968.  Our model is a 342 A, is chambered is 22 Hornet and has a 22 inch barrel.  These rifles had a reputation for being straight shooters and, if you do just a bit of looking around the internet, you'll find lots of folks that have owned these for 50+ years and still love them!

The rifle has open sights, an adjustable rear sight and a fixed front sight with a brass bead at the rear of the sight.  This one also has a Bushnell scope mounted on it.  More on the scope in just a minute.

The rifle has a detachable magazine, an uncheckered pistol grip stock, a manual safety behind the bolt at the rear of the receiver and a black buttpad.

Metal finish remains almost entirely intact except for the very slightest wear at the muzzle.  The barrel crown is smooth, with no nicks.  We'd rate the metal finish as Excellent.  The wood is at least Very Good and probably a bit better than that.  It shows signs of light use, as it should, but no major defects.  Please make sure to take a good look at the photos and we think that you'll agree.  The barrel is very bright, the rifling is strong and the bore is clean and bright.  The buttpad is also in Excellent condition.  The bolt cycles smoothly and the trigger is firm with no take up.

The scope shown on the rifle is a Bushnell Sportview 3-9x.  It's attached to the rifle with a side mount Weaver base and Weaver rings.  The glass and reticle are clear.  The magnification ring moves smoothly and functions normally.  The exterior of the tube is in Very Good condition.

Overall, we'd rate this rifle as being in Excellent condition.  These rifles have a great reputation and this particular one has a lot of life (and a lot of fun) left in it.  This may be one of those firearms that stays in your collection for 50 years also and passes down from generation to generation.  If you like beautiful vintage rifles and have been considering this model, we think this one is more than worth your time to check out.
