This is an absolutely beautiful, like new Ruger Old Army designed for black powder use only.  The original Ruger model number is KBP-7.  We can't say that the gun in unfired and we're not attempting to present it in that manner.  However, we find the gun to be incredibly clean, bright and extremely well preserved.

This particular model is one of the Bicentennial Edition guns, which were known as Liberty Models.  The top of the barrel is stamped, "MADE IN THE 200th YEAR OF AMERICAN LIBERTY".  See the photo that depicts this.  Serial number on this revolver is 6945.

Ruger labeled these revolvers as .44 Caliber but they fire a .457 ball.  The barrel is 7.5" long.  The non-fluted cylinder holds 6 shots, is stamped, "For Black Powder Only" and the lockup is tight.  The rear sight is adjustable.  The front sight is a fixed ramp.

The Walnut grips that contain the Ruger medallion are pristine with no wear and no damage.  Both the frame and barrel are clean, bright and the finish is like new with two small exceptions.  On the right side, just underneath the serial number, there are two small dimples in the finish.  If you don't see them in the photos, that's how small they are.  We mention it only to be complete in our description.  The second exception is on the left hand side of the pin/screw that holds the rammer and cylinder in place.  To us, it appears that the previous owner thought that this pin could be depressed to release the cylinder without adjusting the screw and attempted to do so.  See photos of the left side of the pistol to view this.  We don't find it to be overly noticeable or objectionable but, again, mention it to be complete in our description.

Overall, we think that this revolver is like new/near mint and an amazing example of the limited Liberty Edition of the Old Army revolver.  The gun is a real attention-grabber and not often seen in this condition.

Here are some comments on the Ruger Old Army from Chuck Hawks and Gordon Landers:

After achieving tremendous success with his fine Single Six, Blackhawk, and Super Blackhawk single action cartridge revolvers, the late Bill Ruger set out to design and produce the finest cap and ball revolver ever made. The result is the Old Army, which is based on the three-screw Blackhawk lockwork and uses the same grip frame. This is a traditional single action revolver with a half cock hammer position, not the Ruger New Model lockwork with the transfer bar ignition system.

According to Ruger, the Old Army features an interlocking base pin and rammer assembly that will not unlatch during recoil. It also makes cylinder removal more trouble than with Ruger single action cartridge revolvers or Remington pattern cap and ball revolvers. The Old Army is available in satin stainless steel, gloss stainless steel, or blue finishes; it can be had with or without fully adjustable target-type sights, and with a 5.5" or 7.5" barrel.

A summary of the specifications of Ruger's Old Army .45 revolver are as follows.

  • Type: muzzleloading, cap and ball, six-shot revolver
  • Caliber: .45 BP
  • Proper ball or conical bullet diameter: .457"
  • Overall length: 13 1/2" (with 7.5" barrel)
  • Weight: 2 7/8 pounds

For shipment:  The ATF regulations regarding black powder or muzzle loading devices are fairly complex.  Many black powder guns can ship directly to the purchaser and not be transferred through an FFL.  There are, however, exclusions and exceptions and the rules become complicated relatively quickly.  There is also the issue of state law and these laws vary widely.  As we are a federally licensed dealer, the penalties for interpeting a rule, exclusion or exception incorrectly are very severe.  For both our protection and yours, we will only transfer this revolver through a licensed dealer.  Please don't ask us to do otherwise.

Your purchase will include the revolver, the original purchase receipt from November, 1976, original nipple wrench, warranty card and what was likely the Ruger sticker from the original box.  There is no original box or manual as these have been lost to time.

This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignment items, we have not test fired the weapon.  We have performed all function checks and there are no areas that need attention.  When purchasing a used gun, you should carefully check all of the photos so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the gun.

Determined at checkout.
