This is a very interesting rifle that came into the shop on consignment.  It's a Remington 722 chambered in .257 Roberts with a vintage Weaver scope already mounted.  The XTT barrel code would indicate that it was manufactured in December 1948, the first year that Remington produced the 722.  These rifles have a well-deserved reputation for exceptional accuracy.  The bolt and receiver were based on the Mauser design and are known to be very strong and well-made.  Serial Number on this one is 41187.

The rifle has a 24 inch barrel, walnut stock and a manual safety on the right side of the receiver.  The barrel is bright, the rifling is crisp and the bore is clean.  The exterior of the barrel has minor areas of finish loss, primarily near the muzzle but is in Very Good condition, especially based on the age of the rifle.  The trigger has no takeup and a crisp, clean break.  An Orr's Sporting Goods rubber recoil pad sits at the end of the buttstock.  Front and rear sling swivels are mounted on the stock.

The wood is in mostly good shape but with evidence of honest use.  There are some small knicks in the buttstock that are shown in the pictures.  We do want to call out one item at the top of the buttstock.  We're not sure if the stock was repaired or customized but the top one inch of the stock is not original.  Whether this was a repair or mod, the quality of the work is very good and, based on the apparent age of the wood, was done early in the rifle's life.  We find no problem with this but did feel the need to mention it.  The rear sight has been removed and the front sight has been removed from its dovetail, likely to avoid interfering with the mounted scope.

The vintage scope is a Weaver K 2.5 with leather lens covers.  The elevation and windage adjustments are accessed via the removable metal caps that cover each of them.  If there were rubber coverings around the lens, they have been lost to age.  Redfield rings mount the scope to the rifle.  The glass is semi-clouded by age and the adjustment knob did not move freely.  We did not force it.

Overall, we'd grade this rifle as Very Good and think that it's a very interesting, hard to find early production model.  The rifle appears to have a lot of hunts left in it and would make a very nice addition to a collection.

Purchase includes the rifle, scope and a padded, zippered case.

This is a consignment rifle and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired it.  We have performed all function checks and find no issues that are not mentioned above.  Like all used firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the rifle.
