This WW II production 1903-A3 Remington (Springfield) is a nice example of one of America's most famous and long lasting main battle rifles. It's a consignment sale so we don't know the entire history of the rifle after it left service but it's in very good condition. The serial number of 3761031 would indicate production of the receiver in June, 1943. The barrel stamp is Remington from August, 1944. It’s impossible to know if this rifle wasn’t assembled until 1944 or if the barrel was replaced during or just after the war.
The primary difference between the 1903 and 1903-A3 models is that the A3 has a rear peep sight instead of the earlier ladder rear sight. Additionally, the 1903-A3 stock does not have the finger groves from the 1903. The finish on the A3 is also a parkerized finish instead of the blued finish from the earlier model.
The bolt on this consignment rifle cycles smoothly and locks up tightly. The safety and magazine cutoff move freely and function correctly. The metal is in Very Good condition and, except for some expected wear, we see no serious defects on the metal. The wood stock is in Very Good condition. We do not see any proof marks or cartouches and do not know if those were removed in refinishing or if this is a replacement stock. The metal butt plate does not seem to sit squarely on the stock and we would assume that this is a replacement or that the length of pull was shortened. Please review the photos on this issue. The bore is in Good condition and the barrel appears to be good as well. Mechanically, this appears to be a solid rifle.
The current owner of this rifle inherited it from his father, who used this rifle as a competitive shooter. If you’re after a very neat piece of history and a rifle that still shoots like a champ, take a good look at this one. These rifles typically sell for a good bit more than what this one is priced at. The owner has it priced to sell and it’s a bargain at this price.
Purchase includes the rifle, nylon sling and protective gun “sock”.
This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignment offerings, we have not test fired this rifle. We have performed all function checks and find no issues. Like all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the rifle.
