This Marlin Model 1895 chambered in 45-70 Govt with a 22" barrel is a great find and has the features that collectors find most valuable.  It's a consignment offering so we have not fired the rifle but it passes all function checks.

The serial number would indicate production in 1979.  Manufacture of this rifle was in New Haven, CT prior to the Remington takeover and quality of the New Haven guns was significantly better.  The sought-after JM stamp is evident on the barrel, just forward of the receiver.  It has the straight stock that, again, is the more sought-after model and the curved butt plate.  This model was also produced prior to the introduction of the safety.

Loading is accomplished via the side gate on the receiver and the rifle has a capacity of 4+1.  The hammer features half-cock and full-cock positions.  The trigger has no slack and a consistent, crisp break.  The barrel is exceptionally bright while the rifling is clean and crisp.  A Lyman adjustable peep sight has been added to the rear of the receiver and, with it installed, this rifle should be a tack driver.  The rear sight base remains in place but the actual sight has been removed so as not to interfere with the sight picture through the Lyman sight.  Front blade sight remains in place.

The lever action was, initially, not as smooth as expected but was quickly remedied with a light application of oil.  Action is now as it should be, but would likely improve even further with a thorough cleaning and lubrication.  Honestly, we just don't think that this rifle has seen much, if any, use over the last few years.  The entire bolt is clean and shiny.

The wood has signs of honest use with most marks concentrated on the right side of the buttstock.  There are minor areas of finish wear.  Mostly these are:  top of barrel midway between forearm and muzzle, near the trigger guard, on the left side of the receiver just forward of the buttstock and on the top side of the receiver.  We mention these only to be as complete as possible in our description.  The rifle likely retains at least 95% or more of its original finish.

This ad is for the rifle only and does not include a box or manual.  As with all used guns, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully acquainted with the condition.  Overall, we'd rate this rifle as Very Good.

This is a very nice, early model Marlin that has those features most popular amoung Marlin buyers.  If you want to buy it as a shooter, it has a lot of life in it and should be a highly accurate rifle.  If you're a collector, review the features on this rifle as it would be a great addition to a collection.
