This consignment rifle came into our shop along with several other firearms and it has some neat, unique features to it. The JC Higgins brand was a Sears brand and almost all of the Higgins firearms were variations of other models. The JC Higgins model 30 (Sears 583.70) was a variation of the High Standard Model 30. Based on our research, we believe that this rifle would have been made in the 1953-1954 timeframe. There is no serial number.
The rifle is chambered for 22LR only, a semi-automatic action and has a 24 inch barrel. The rear sight is adjustable and the front sight is fixed. It has a push button manual safety. The cocking handle is on the left side of the receiver, although the ejection port is on the right. The Model 30 had a retractable sling that stored in the buttstock but pulled out and attached underneath the barrel when in use. Our sling functions correctly and is in good shape.
The blued metal finish is mostly intact and in good shape although there is one scratch on the right side of the barrel at the rear of the front sight. The wood is attractive in appearance and in good shape with the exception of a crack to the rear of the receiver, near the top of the pistol grip. The crack runs from the right to left side of the stock.
The mounted scope is a Bushnell 3x-7x Custom .22. The scope is in good shape and has removable lens covers. There is one scratch on the right side of the tube. All adjustment knobs move freely and as expected.
These rifles, although inexpensive, were known as very accurate shooters and the scope should keep you really dialed in. Unique features, a good look and an inexpensive price make this a nice option for either your own plinking or squirrel gun or to train a new shooter. Definitely worth a look!
