This consignment gun is a JC Higgins Model 20. JC Higgins firearms were produced for Sears between 1946 and 1962. We do not know the exact year of production for this specific shotgun. All of the JC Higgins line were variants of models from different manufacturers. The model 20 for sale here is a variant of the High Standard Model 200.
Our Model 20 is a 12 Gauge and is chambered for 2-3/4" shells.The model 20 may have been a "store" brand but they have a great reputation for high quality contstruction and very smooth shooting characteristics. We've read some reviews of the model that called them one of the top models every produced. I'm not sure that we'd go that far but this does look and feel like a very good quality gun.
The 22 inch vent rib barrel also has the JC Higgins adjustable choke/compensator on it. A bead front sight is at the end of the barrel. The adjustable choke can be rotated to cylinder, improved cylinder, modified, improved modified, full and X-Full. Length of the adjustable system is 4.5 inches. The shotgun has a push button safety.
The wood stock has a grooved forearm and a checkered pistol grip with a black cap on the pistol grip. The wood is in Good condition but does shows signs of normal use. We find no cracks in the stock. The JC Higgins rubber recoil pad is in Very Good condition.
The metal has most of the original finish intact. The bore is clean and the barrel is bright. The action is smooth and normal. There are some minor scratches on the receiver and, again, the metal shows signs of just honest use. This has been a reliable working shotgun but has not been abused or beat up. We'd describe the metal as Good and possibly even a bit better than that.
If you're looking for an affordable and reliable shotgun to actually use and enjoy shooting, this is one that you should definitely check out. Maybe you'll be one of the folks that calls it one of the best models ever produced!
