J Stevens

This vintage Side by Side from J. Stevens came into our shop as a consignment.  It is labeled on the right side of the receiver as a Model 5100.  There is no serial number, nor is one required.

If you’ve ever tried to research the history on any of the older models from J. Stevens, you know how challenging that can be due to the loss of factory records.  To the best of our ability, we believe that this model was likely manufactured between 1941 and 1948.

The barrels are 30 inches in length, with a solid rib and a single bead sight at the end of the barrel.  A manual safety is located on the tang.  The shotgun features double triggers.  The receiver is color case hardened.  Underneath the handguard, the letter “A” is stamped inside of a circle, the letter “D” is stamped inside of a circle and the letters “E” and “H” are stamped.  On the underside of the barrel are the letters “V” and “U” and also the letter “I”.  The letter “I” is inside of a circle.  The same markings are found on the receiver.

The lockup of the barrels is tight.  There is light fouling at the bores that looks like it will clean up.  The barrels are bright.  Finish on the barrels is Good and mostly intact.  The wood is in Good condition.  It does show signs of use but is in overall Good condition.  The ventilated recoil pad is a Pachmayr White Line model.  The color case hardened finish is still visible and in good shape.

This is a nice, vintage shotgun that’s available at an affordable price.  Whether it’s on display or in use in the field, it should look and perform beautifully.
