One of the great things about doing consignment sales is that you often get to see some very rare model firearms that have been preserved in amazing condition.  This shotgun is one of those.  Technically, this is a Lefever Nitro Special made by Ithaca Gun Co.  Ithaca produced the Lefever Nitro Special in 12, 16 and 20 Gauge versions, along with the 410 Bore.  We have found the 410 Bore to be the more elusive (and most valuable) of the group.  The Blue Book of Gun Values agrees with our assessment.

Our shotgun has a serial number of 352748, which would indicate likely production in 1939.  The serial numbers on the receiver, barrel and foregrip all match.

The barrels are 26 inches long and are chambered for 3 inch shells.  One is a full choke and the other is a modified, based on the "4" and "2" numbering.  The barrels are fired by a single trigger and a tang safety is easily operated by your thumb.  A bead front sight sits between the two barrels.  This shotgun removes the shells by extractors and not ejectors.  The action release lever still sits right of center, indicating limited use.  Lockup is good and tight.  Barrels are bright and clean and the bores are clean, with no rust or pitting.  The metal finish remains almost entirely intact on the barrels (please see pictures).  The receiver is nicely engraved on both sides with the engraving still visible and evident.

The stock has a checkered pistol grip and checkered forearm.  The great looking wood has no major defects, just signs of honest use.  Again, please see the pictures and we think you'll agree.  We'd rate the wood as at least Very Good.  The black Ithaca buttplate is intact and in Very Good condition.

These were produced as a working man's side by side and most of them saw a good amount of use.  They were affordable and reliable and didn't tend to sit at home.  Because they were so commonly used, it's unusual to see a 1939 model in this fantastic of a condition.  If you're a fan or the more rare vintage shotguns or need that missing piece to your collection, please take a good look at this one.  We don't think that you'll find a better example of this very classic shotgun.  This isn't an inexpensive model but we think that it's worth every penny and likely to only continue increasing in value.

Purchase is for the shotgun only and protective cloth "sock".

This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired this shotgun.  We have performed all function checkes and find no issues.  As with all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the shotgun.
