This consignment sale of a Colt Model 1889 Navy is an example of the first double action revolver with a swing-out cylinder.  The first 5000 or so of these revolvers went to the U.S. Navy and the revolver was then available for commercial purchase.  The Model 1889 Navy pieces were manufactured from 1889 - 1894.  Ours has serial number 21220 was rolled out of the factory in 1892.  The serial number, as is correct for this model is located on the butt.  The numbers "364" are present on the cylinder release lever, the cylinder face, the underneath side of the barrel, the crane and the frame.  The sideplate in on the right side of the frame.

The revolver features a 1.5" barrel, has a cylinder holding 6 shots and can fire in either single or double action.  One unique feature about this model is that the cylinder rotates counter clockwise.  There also are no locking latches on the cylinder.  That is the correct design for the 1889 Navy.  Most of the markings on the barrel have been lost to age with only "41" being visible on the left side of the barrel.

The grips are the hard rubber variety with the Colt logo at the top of the grip in an oval.  Each of the grip panels has a small chip right at the butt.

The bore is good, the barrel is bright and the rifling is visible.  We offer those details even though we would assume that this revolver will be for display and not use.

Most of the finish has faded away and there is minor pitting in some areas but we see no rust.

Overall, this is a very nice collectible from the late 1800s.  The historical significance regarding the first double action swing out cylinder adds to the desirability of the revolver.  If you're a Colt collector (or if you want to be), we think that this one is worth a good, long look.

Purchase is for the revolver only as shown.  No other parts or accessories are included in the sale.

This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired this revolver.  Our description regarding condition is above.  As with all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the revolver.

Determined at checkout.
