We have a long-term customer that inherited a large, amazing collection of firearms. He's kept the ones that he wants and has brought a large number of them to us as consignment items. It's been an incredible collection of vintage firearms that have been maintained in fantastic condition. This Browning continues the trend.
John Browning's A5 or Auto 5 model is probably one of the most popular, long lasting shotgun models ever produced. Since the first models were produced in 1903, there's been a tremendous amount of history behind this shotgun. We believe this to be one of the "American Browning" shotguns that were produced by Remington due to the barrel markings and the "A" prefix on the serial number. Remington produced these Brownings from 1940 - 1947 as Belgian production was stopped during World War II. We can't date it more specifically than that but our serial number is just about 2400 numbers into the Remington run so it's likely in the early part of that time frame. Speaking of serial numbers, ours is A7482. The serial number on the barrel and the receiver both match.
The barrel is 28 inches long and the markings on the barrel indicate that it is a full choke. It is chambered for 2-3/4", 16 Gauge shells. The left side of the barrel is a two line marking. The top line reads, Browning Arms Company St Louis MO The second line reads, * Special Steel - 16 Gauge - Shells 2-3/4". At the left, rear side of the barrel, there is an "L" stamp and the letters "BP" are stamped inside of an oval. The barrel is bright and the bore is exceptionally bright and shiny.
The wood is a checkered pistol grip stock and a checkered forearm. The pistol grip is the rounded type. The receiver is engraved on both sides and the engraving is clear and sharp. A manual safety is at the rear of the trigger guard and a bead front sight sits on top of the barrel.
The metal finish is in Excellent condition and the pictures show what we mean. We'd rate the wood as Good. There are no cracks that we could find, just signs of use as also shown in the pictures. The Browning buttpad is also in Good condition.
We'll admit that we have a bit of a weakness for Browning A5 shotguns, but then a lot of folks do and for good reason. If you're a fan of classic A5 shotguns or just a fan of vintage shotguns in general, we don't think that you'll be disappointed in this one. Take a good look through the photos and we think you'll agree that this is probably one of the better looking older Brownings that you'll find. This is one of those heirloom models that can pass from generation to generation in your family.
Purchase includes the shotgun and protective cloth "sock".
This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired this shotgun. We have performed all function checks and find no issues. As with all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the shotgun.
